The nation’s highest profile national Republican figure came out this week to his family, friends and closes colleagues. Former Republican National Chairman (and former campaign manager for George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election bid) Ken Mehlman announced that he was gay after waiting his entire life with coming to terms with his sexuality. Mr. Mehlman reported that that he reached the decision to come out in part because he would like to play a greater role as an advocate for same-sex marriage.

You have to admire a man who has spent most of his political life against gay civil rights and the struggle (emotionally and internally) he must have been going through for many years. While some pundits are calling him a hypocrite, I think many people probably don’t understand the day to day struggle he must have been facing. Coming out is extremely personal and the road a person takes is his or her own personal journey. That journey may take months, may take years or may take a lifetime – but the fact that he had the courage to come out at all – says a lot. Hopefully, this respected face of the Republican party can help shape and change the rampant anti-gay agenda that exist with the Republican party.
